How can I lower my heating oil costs?
We encourage our customers to look into these options for managing their heating oil cost.
- Conservation. The best way to lower your heating oil cost is to use less oil. From programmable / smart thermostats to spot-heating, there are many ways to conserve.
- Price Protection and Fixed Pricing Options. We offer two kinds of pricing options to help protect you from sudden increases in heating oil prices. While these programs do not guarantee a savings, they can help ease your mind during seasons when we experience major fluctuations in the price of heating oil. - Monthly Payment Plans. Our Monthly Payment Plans option spreads your estimated annual heating oil cost into equal and lower monthly payments. Your monthly payment will be the same each month, regardless of the number of oil deliveries you receive. This is especially helpful in the coldest months, when oil deliveries tend to be more frequent. Equipment service plans may also be included in your monthly payment plan.
Can I view my account balance and make a payment online?
Yes! You may to view your account information, check your balance, make payments using our secure online Customer Account Portal.
Do you have any customer discounts?
Yes. Customers with an equipment service agreement receive a $0.05 per gallon discount on their heating oil.
Do you have charge delivery or cancellation fees?
No, we do not charge a delivery fee or any other hidden fees. And because we do not force customers into an annual heating oil contract, there are no cancellation fees either. Our relationship with our customers is built on trust and value, not contracts.
Do you have any contracts that force customers to stay with Stover Energy?
No. There are no contracts or cancellation fees that would force you to purchase heating oil and other services from us. We do offer customers optional price protection and equipment service plans, but they do not force you to purchase heating oil or other services from Stover Energy. The cost for these optional programs is non-refundable in the event a customer terminates their account with Stover Energy.
How long does my special introductory price last and what happens when it expires?
To earn your business and experience our superior heating oil service risk-free, we may offer you a lower introductory heating oil price. When the introductory period ends, we will charge you our market heating oil price, unless you chose to enroll in one of our pricing programs. Our market price is always fair and competitive. We also provide the highest quality fuel with additives that protect your heating system and reduce your heating costs overall. It’s important to note that some companies attract new customers by offering extremely low heating oil prices. To get such low prices, customers are often locked into long-term contracts with high cancellation fees. Their existing customers even make up the loss by paying prices that are above the market. Stover Energy does not do this. Instead, we work hard to earn your business based on value and trust.
Why do prices fluctuate so much?
Heating oil is a commodity that is bought and sold on the NYMEX. That market is driven primarily by supply, demand, and sometimes speculation. Political conditions in major oil-producing regions can affect supply. Locally, if we experience a mild winter, regional fuel inventory (fuel that is ready to be delivered for consumption) build up, and prices typically decrease. Conversely, colder-than-expected temperatures cause prices to increase as inventories decrease. On the demand side, rapidly growing economies, like China and India have increased demand for oil worldwide.
Should I use a lower quality oil when heating oil prices are high?
No. Quality becomes even more important when oil prices increase! Stover’s fortified, heating oil provides better fuel efficiency, is competitively priced, helps extend the life of your furnace or boiler. Don’t sacrifice your heating equipment for a few cents per gallon.
Will you deliver more oil if I am on automatic delivery?
No. We schedule deliveries when our computerized delivery system projects that your tank is between 1/3 and 1/2 full. Smaller, more frequent deliveries are far less efficient to deliver and would drive our fuel prices up unnecessarily. We do everything we can to keep our fuel prices as low as possible!
How do you know when it’s time to deliver oil to my home?
If you are on automatic delivery, we use a K-factor to measure your home’s individual heating oil consumption. Similar to your car’s miles-per-gallon ratio, your K-factor allows us to estimate how much oil your home uses. A home’s K-factor is based on several factors including: size of your home, equipment efficiency, occupancy, and any use of alternate fuels for heating or hot water. Combined with degree days, our computer system provides an extremely accurate portrait of your home’s fuel usage and delivery needs. A high K-factor indicates high usage, whereas a low K-factor indicates lower usage, given the identical weather conditions. We can usually establish an accurate K-factor after three consecutive deliveries to your house. Before then, we will set a lower K-factor to help ensure that you do not run out of fuel. If a change has occurred in your home, such as an addition, new baby, alternate heat source, please let us know, so that we can adjust your K-factor accordingly.
What’s a Degree Day?
A degree day is the standard unit of measurement used to estimate the energy needed to heat homes and buildings. Generally, a degree day equals 65°F minus the average temperature in a 24-hour period. For example, if yesterday’s average temperature was 40°F, twenty-five (25) degree days will be recorded. Using your K-factor, we know how many degree days your fuel will last, and that allows us to schedule your next oil delivery.
What if it snows when I am due for a delivery?
In addition to degree days, our delivery team watches weather forecasts closely for extreme weather, including snow and ice storms. When storms are predicted, we will often deliver sooner than your K-factor requires to ensure you have the fuel you will need. We also do our best to deliver to customers with difficult driveways before storms make driveways impassable. After it snows, it is important that you clear your driveway at least 11-feet wide, to allow safe passage for our large and heavy delivery vehicles. Even if your vehicle can navigate your driveway, our vehicles may not be able to.
What else can I do to help my delivery person when we have bad weather?
- Before snow covers the ground, place a stake with a colored grocery bag or ribbon on it to mark the location of your oil tank fill.
- In times of very deep snow, uncover the fill pipe. Your delivery person would also appreciate it if you clear a path to your fill pipe.
What is your “No Run-Out” Guarantee?
We’re so confident in our ability to make timely automatic deliveries that we guarantee you will not run out of oil. If you run out of oil because we failed to properly schedule your delivery, we will credit your account $50 and make an emergency delivery to you.
I supplement my oil heat with a wood stove (or other type of fuel). Will that affect my automatic deliveries?
All sources of heat should be reflected in your K-factor. Please call us if you add or stop using a supplemental heat source.
Do I need to be home to get oil delivered?
No. Unless we need to enter the garage or house to start the burner or access the fill, we can deliver fuel without anyone being home. If you have pets, please ensure their safety and the safety of our delivery personnel by properly securing all pets – even friendly ones.
What if I only want deliveries in the winter?
You can request a “summer hold,” which will inform our team not to make a delivery between March 15th and October 15th. Call Customer Service at 717-534-1903 to request summer delivery hold.
What should I do if I am running low on oil and cannot get a delivery immediately?
We suggest that customers not let their tank level fall below 30 gallons. If you think you will drop below 30 gallons or fear you will run out of oil completely, you may purchase diesel or kerosene fuel from a reputable gas station until you are able to get a delivery. We care about you and will do everything we can to deliver to you as soon as possible!
What should I do if I have no heat?
Call us! 717-534-1903. Our Automatic Delivery customers receive top priority in emergency situations and will usually receive delivery on the same day. We try to fill all our customers’ tanks in need of delivery as soon as possible, which is usually within one business day.
Are your telephones answered around the clock? During extreme weather?
Yes. Our phone calls are monitored around the clock. If we do not answer your phone call immediately, we will call you back quickly!
What is the difference between a full-service heating oil company and a discount heating oil company?
Stover Energy is a full-service company. We provide reliable and timely oil delivery, emergency delivery service, service on your heating equipment, pricing and payment programs, and more. A discount company delivers heating oil without these important benefits. Choosing an oil company based on price alone rarely results in the savings you expect and could put your home and family at risk.
I’ve noticed some oil on the floor under my tank. Do I need a new tank?
Possibly, but not necessarily. Without touching the tank, see if you can identify where oil may be coming from (i.e., a loose fitting where the line meets the tank, puncture or other damage). Do not touch or try to remove rust from the bottom of an oil tank! If your tank has rust or any oily stains toward the bottom call us immediately to schedule an estimate for tank replacement.
