Highspire, PA was laid out in the early 1800s by two German immigrants, Henry Berentz and Michael Dochterman. Some people believe that the name Highspire came from a town in Bavaria, while others think it was the result of the tall spire of the church that could be seen all the way from the Susquehanna River. Before Berentz and Dochterman arrived, Highspire, PA was home to a stone grist mill that attracted workers to the area. The mill operated throughout the 1960s, when it was closed due to a decline in the industry. While the mill sits empty today, there are still cereal manufacturing plants in the town that distribute a delicious maple scent throughout the streets!

Highspire, PA is also known for agriculture. While the farmland was rich and perfect for planting, it was hard to take produce from the town to markets in Philadelphia and Baltimore. As a result, farmers used grain to create whiskey. Highspire, PA whiskey traveled on boats to Havre de Grace and Baltimore. The Wilson Distillery evolved into the Highspire Distilling Company in the early 1900s. Throughout the early 20th century, Highspire Distilling Company produced over 5,500 barrels of whiskey a year before the industry died with the start of prohibition.

Since the early 1900s, Highspire has continued to grow. Numerous buildings, including Highspire High School, are listed on the National Register of History Places. With a population of 2,400 people, this community remains a wonderful place to live.
